Innovative water treatment company secures IP with Appleyard Lees

Shropshire based water treatment, recycling and processing company, SureWaters, has secured funding from Appleyard Lees to protect its innovative procedure and products for managing and cleaning water.

Initially a consultancy, SureWaters helps global enterprises like Heinz, Diageo and Marks & Spencer to manage its water consumption and treatment, and now more recently has developed its own process of water treatment using electrocoagulation, which uses electricity to strip away pollution.

Tom Ritchie, who has a background in pharmaceuticals, launched the company in 2009 because he wanted to be his own boss and pursue his own ideas in water research and technology. His company now employs 40 people across the UK and operates globally.

Turning to Appleyard Lees, a leading firm of patent and trade mark attorneys, Tom contacted senior associate, Terry Instone, to protect SureWaters’ intellectual property and to file multiple patent applications for its products and methods.

Tom said: “When we first approached Terry to help us with our IP applications, we were instantly impressed with his background and skills.”

“Since Terry has a very detailed knowledge in chemical engineering, he was able to simply sit and listen to our business ideas, then go away and produce an application that was aligned with our technical specifications and language – I don’t think you’d get this at any other firm in the UK.”

As SureWaters is a start-up venture, the Appleyard Lees Growth Fund was a perfect fit in helping the company to secure patents essential to protecting its system, hardware and package solutions.

He continued: “Initially, we weren’t seeking out the Growth Fund. We were simply looking for IP advice. However, to be told that we could not only access the expertise we needed but also qualify for funding to help with our IP fees was a big bonus.”

In addition to offering assistance in creating and managing an intellectual property portfolio, IP experts at Appleyard Lees can guide their clients through the patent landscaping process and IP due diligence.

Terry Instone added: “The Appleyard Lees Growth Fund offers vital support to businesses that have winning ideas and a proven track record of innovation. Financial support from the fund is designed to help clients to protect and nurture their intellectual property. SureWaters’ methods and products will revolutionise the industry and inspire others to think about water treatment differently.”
