Paul is a Partner in our Engineering & Physics team and is based in our Halifax office. Paul uses his dual qualification as a Patent and Trade Mark Attorney to help clients resolve all types of IP disputes. He has a particular interest in litigation support, and regularly advises and represents clients at EPO oppositions, UKIPO hearings, and the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court (formerly Patents County Court).
With a strong technical background in Engineering and a particular interest in manufacturing, Paul utilises his expertise to undertake drafting work and to prosecute patent applications through the UK and European patent systems. Paul handles the Patent portfolios of several global corporations and directly advises the boards of many UK based manufacturers. Before joining Appleyard Lees, Paul worked in the research department of an electronic manufacturing company. Paul has experience of representing many different manufacturing and engineering sectors and has experience in a range of technologies including packaging, consumer goods, oil and gas, and medical devices.
Alongside helping clients obtain worthwhile protection, Paul focuses on advising clients on disputes through both effective use of the client’s own rights and also avoidance of third party rights. Paul has a reputation for understanding the commercial picture and aims to balance the legal rights, costs and commercial objectives for each client. Contentious proceedings cannot always be avoided, and Paul has successfully used litigation within the UK to further client’s objectives.
